PUBLIC EDUCATION AND INVOLEMENT

Public education is a huge part of the Phase II NPDES Stormwater Permit. This is where many municipalities run short of resources and expertise. The following websites give examples of educational programs being implemented by other cities and give technical assistance on stormwater issues.

Texas Stream Team
Texas Stream Team is a program that trains and educates volunteers to gather environmental data through stream monitoring. Texas Watch is a prime opportunity for public involvement. The local partner for this program is the Houston-Galveston Area Council.

Clean Water Clear Choice
Clean Water Clear Choice is an educational website for professionals, children, and the general public. It is sponsored by the joint task force consisting of City of Houston, Harris County (HC), Harris County Flood Control District (HCFCD) and Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT).

EPA Environmental Education
This website offers a wide variety of education resources and environmental education grants.

National Environmental Education and Training Foundation
This website has information about education for children, adults, and businesses. Also offers grants.

Growing Native
Information on using native plants in landscaping.

WaterSmart Landscaping
This website provides information for water conserving, non-polluting, and low maintenance landscaping just right for the Gulf Coast area.

Earth 911
Earth 911 offers various types of local environmental information via zip code. Also has a multi-media library for use in your community.
