For the past 3 years, Austin High school’s Environmental Science
students have been avid participators in the Brays Wetland project.
The 2001-2 Advance Placement students were already
involved in water quality monitoring and included sampling and testing
at the Mason Park site as part of their area.
Students collected water from Brays bayou as well as the culvert
location where runoff will feed into the created treatment wetland.
Austin high school students traveled to Brazoria, Galveston and
Chambers county to collect: pickerel weed, maidencane, black needlerush,
cutgrass, spider lilies and arrowhead. Most students who attended
the field trips had never been “in the wild.”
Austin high school’s dedication stems from their devoted teacher,
Peggy Campbell. She worked hard to establish their wetland pond
(with many of the same species for plants that we have at the Nursery).
