Working with Cesar E. Chavez High School

Our adventures with Chavez high school began in 2002 with the Freshman Science class. Students were brought out to the Natural Resource Center in Baytown, and introduced to the plant propagation efforts at the Center. At the time, the students prepared the above-ground ponds for new plants, which were eventually placed.

Students traveled to Chambers and Galveston county to collect: maidencane, jamaica sawgrass, and pickerel weed.

This year, the Chavez sophomores had a chance to get really muddy with weeding, weeding and more weeding. We also did a little bit of collecting---Jamaica sawgrass for our intermediate tidal areas. Everyone was well-prepared with gloves and long-sleeve shirts. Mostly we added prepared pots to the pond and placed our new sprigs of Sawgrass.
