NRG Energy EcoCenter---A Partnership Nursery

The Eco Center, in Baytown, TX, is our plant stock headquarters. This facility is part of the Cedar Bayou Power Plant facility on Cedar Bayou. The site has 24 earthern ponds, a greenhouse, a boat shed, a storage shed and a main office/classroom facility. Texas Genco has been a partner in our restoration projects from day one with their support of ponds, potting soil, pots, fertilizer and most importantly, advise and assistance.

The native wetland plants for the Brays project are stored and maintained at this location. Currently, we are using 2 earthen ponds, approximately ¼ acre in size, and 3 9’X20’ constructed ponds. While the constructed ponds have a fixed water level, the earthern ponds have a sloped bottom which enables us to place deeper water plants, like swamp lilly, on one end and shallow water or moist soil plants, like marsh hay cordgrass, on the opposite end. Neither of our two earthern ponds are at capacity. Even with almost 9,000 plants in storage between the various ponds, we still have room for more.

Maintenance is a constant issue at the nursery, and the volunteer support of the Texas Master Naturalists has been critical. The collection of the plants began in spring 2001, and has continued up to today. We continue to add species and replacement plants to our stock. With the addition of the Sheldon Lake Restoration project, our plant stock will increase in variety and number.
